EDUCATION

A 2017 UNESCO report found that if all students in low-income countries had basic literacy skills–and only that–“an estimated 171 million people could escape extreme poverty.”

At Nehemiah, education is one of our four pillars on which the growth and development of our residents is supported. At its inception, before we had a home, the boys were taught the alphabet and basic numeracy on sidewalks. Now, upon arriving at the home, each new resident is evaluated to see if their first steps of formal education will consist of enrollment at a formal school, home school, or the government offered Alternative Learning System. In most cases, each resident will take advantage of multiple options as they endeavor to catch up on years of lost learning. While it does not always come to pass, we strive to see each participant finish high school before they leave our care.
